My interest in nonprofits began when I visited Thailand. Growing up, I had always heard about Thailand from the stories my aunt told us kids about her experience in Thailand. She was a missionary there for 40 years! She worked with the hill tribe communities. She helped teach English, and trades to the villagers so they would have better economic and educational opportunities. I took an interest in her background and longed to visit the land she had talked about so lovingly.
My interest in working in Public Relations started as a ninth grader in high school while on the school newspaper. I realized that I could combine my love of Journalism with my love of sports at the time (I still do love sports). It was a natural decision to come to the University of Oregon and major in Public Relations.
Fast forward to 2020, my mom and I ended up visiting Thailand and seeing the hill tribes that she worked with. Her friends were now reaching retirement age, and the younger generation she taught and influenced was now taking over the operations. We were toured around by people that she had known and worked with. They bent over backward for us, and we so appreciated it. So many people told us about how she helped them and had personal stories.
Going to Thailand and seeing the work she and her friends did and its impact generations down the line made me want to work for a nonprofit. I dream of using my skills in a way that brings a change in people’s lives, no matter the location.
With that passion in mind, I aspire to help small nonprofits utilize the tool that is social media to bring awareness to their issue or cause. When used correctly, social media can be a powerful tool. I hope to break social media down enough for people to be able to use and find it helpful. I enjoy watching the trends of social media, as well as studying them.
I look forward to bringing you along on this endeavor over the next couple of months; I will post weekly blogs. I encourage healthy discussion on my posts.
