Portland Fruit Tree Project’s Urban Orchard Training Program

[Portland, Oregon] Portland Fruit Tree Project is recruiting new trainees, clients, and experienced professionals for their Urban Orchard Training Program’s winter session, starting  January 1, 2023. Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis starting in August. This program is currently in its second year.

For a two-month quarter, Portland Fruit Tree Project is recruiting historically excluded trainees, including People of Color, women, and LGBTQ people. There is an 18 and over age limit, and hours are flexible around an individual’s schedule. The initial fee is $20. Trainees are paid a living wage to learn and gain experience in the green industry. Trainees get in the field experience and see what happens behind the scenes.

PFTP is looking for interested tree owners to allow the program trainees to care for their fruit trees to have the program come and gain experience working on their trees.  PFTP is happy to provide pro bono tree care if finances are constrained.

The PFTP Urban Orchard Training Program team is looking for experienced green industry professionals to help teach trainees. Portland Fruit Tree Project would like professionals to come, no matter the length of time.

Those interested in becoming trainees, clients, or experienced professionals are encouraged to keep an eye on https://www.portlandfruit.org for upcoming announcements surrounding the program.  Or to reach out to our Fruit Tree Education Coordinator, Liliana. Early applications are encouraged by emailing Liliana Morgan at [email protected]

I wrote this press release during my time as an intern at Portland Fruit Tree Project. I was a Public Relations intern, who reported directly to the Marketing manager. I was a one-person PR department and was in charge of writing the press releases and interviewing staff and volunteers to find out about what Portland Fruit Tree Project had going on and coming up. I learned a lot about working with a nonprofit and how a workforce operates. I enjoyed my time there.
